INTER SECONDARY SCHOOL DEBATE COMPETITION


As part of its educational initiative assistance project, Vision Center International (VCI) held a debate competition among secondary schools around the Doko community tagged the ‘DOKO COMMUNITY INTER SECONDARY SCHOOLS DEBATE COMPETITION 2022’. 9 (Nine) secondary schools registered to participate in the competition.

The schools are:

1. Government Day Secondary School, Gaba

2. Community Technical Commercial College, Vunchi

3. St Peters Anglican Secondary School, Sekiwa

4. Government Science College, Doko

5. Eng. A.A Kure CAIS, Ndaloke

6. Government Day Secondary School, Busu

7. Army Day Secondary School, Bida

8. Glosmy Academy, Jima

9. Government Day Secondary School, Jima

The Government Science College, Doko hall was the host venue. The competition was divided into two parts, the first round of the competition was held on November 14, 2022. Four schools qualified for the final round of the competition which was held on November 24, 2022. The finalists were:

1. Government Day Secondary School, Gaba

2. Community Technical Commercial College, Vunchi

3. St Peters Anglican Secondary School, Sekiwa

4. Government Science College, Doko.

The guest of honour, the Lavun Local Government Education Officer was represented by the Education Supervisor, Alhaji Jibrin Zubairu. At the end of a well contested debate, the first position went to St Peter’s Anglican Secondary School, Sekiwa, second position went to Government Day Secondary School, Gaba, Community Technical Commercial College, Vunchi came third and Government Science College, Doko came fourth. Each school was represented by three speakers.

Scholarships awards in the form of WAEC and JAMB registration fees was announced to the 9 winners as follows:

- 1st position: Scholarships for WAEC and JAMB N28, 000 x 3 students - N84,000

- 2nd position: Scholarship for WAEC N21, 000 x 3 students - N63,000

- 3rd position: Scholarship for WAEC N21, 000 x 3 students - N63, 000

Total ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------N210, 000

Cash gifts of N3, 000 (Three Thousand Naira) each were given to the twelve student finalists, totaling N36,000 (Thirty-Six Thousand Naira) Cash gifts of N2, 000 (Two Thousand Naira) each were also given to the other fifteen participating students, totaling N30,000 (Thirty Thousand Naira)

In addition, all the participating students got five VCI customized exercise books each.

The schools were not left out. The following winning schools were awarded cash gifts:

- First position - St Peter’s Anglican Secondary School, Sekiwa received N40,000 (Forty Thousand Naira)

- Second position - Government Day Secondary School, Gaba received N30,000 (Thirty Thousand Naira)

- Third position - Community Technical Commercial College, Vunchi received N20,000 (Twenty Thousand Naira)

The debate was spiced up with a raffle draw for the students. The following prizes were won by students:

- 120 Customized VCI exercise books

- 100 writing Pens

- 12 Mathematical sets

- 5 Scientific calculators

The organization was commended for bringing the debate activity to the community. The students were extremely happy, particularly the 9 students that won the scholarship awards.

VCI will make the debate competition an annual event and likely increase the scholarship awards next year.
